hey will..... boy that was a long f*cking comment.... i think i was a bit high and that show was a bit of a revelation. i used to be strickly 77 and then 73 and then only this last year or so did start listening to 70-71..... and though 71 is maligned by some and the setlists ARE often same-ish..... their barband era they said, it was still a part of the arch that came down as it were on 8/26/71

Gaelic Park, THE BRONX, N.Y. 1971

after mickey dropped out on february 19, IN MY ESTIMATION the band quickly started to resemble a QUARTET as PIg's contribution was limited to very specific songs. even within those songs his organ playing was extremely limited and most of the time a NON-FACTOR. i find it an exciting era to listen to. all the instruments are clear in the recordings and the sparser sound, i.e. MINUS mickey, MINUS t.c., MINUS a fully participating PIG....we get to hear the core group interacting tightly.

SO, of course the next arch began on 10/19/71 as keith joined and transformed the roots and R&B "quartet" almost overnight -- the jazz-rock-hippy amalgam was born....

OOPS, dinner's burning and now this show is gone from the archive?

I can't say enough about Gaelic Park. It is literally the end of an era.

However,if you listen to well mixed tapes from the first half of 1971--e.g. The Fillmore East Box--you can hear Pig's playing clearly. It hearkens back to the style of the original quintet, and on many older tunes (e.g. Minglewood, Dew), his sound is quite fine. He's just not an in your face keyboardist--but he's solid nonetheless.

And his stage presence was always commanding. As to his decreased role in the band--go back to 1970--even earlier--and you will notice that he doesn't sing very many songs. His contributions seem to stand out, and his showstoppers made up for the low numbers of songs.

Leave it to Dire and GoP to bring this thread down to a common denominator of the sort that I will not even acknowledge...other than by this post...but since it is in the spirit of uplifting the thread, I will be forgiven.

Get it together, you two.

Sorry WT--I've been away from the forum and just scrolled down to find a post from Dire to inquire as to his welfare. I figured beter that than a whole new "hey Dire (non Dead)" thread. I read the '71 thread and I think you are right on about the HtH. My other fave '71 moment is the jam between Alligator and Goin Down from 4/29. In my opinion, the most incredible 4 piece jam EVER--talk about group mind! (there, how's that?)

Hey SacTown--if you don't know by now that I was only foolin'...well, it's true. So good to see you hereabouts, I would never want to be one to somehow discourage that. So, stick around, and don't give anything I would say a second thought.

I knew you was foolin'...(the emoticon gave you away! If you gave me the finger, maybe I wouldn't have been so sure!).
Been away more than a week and who knows what all I missed. I come here often, but participate sporadically.
Although quite a flurry of responses to day old threads (bread?) today.
Thanks for your steady hand on the tiller of the Forum!

Good news, man. Slips are gonna happen, try not to make it a habit (pun intended!), though. Just pick yourself up and dust yourself off, and start again. Call someone (like me) when you get squirrely--just verbalizing it to someone else can relieve some of the pressure.
I've stepped up my meeting attendance lately, and am actually thinking about finishing the steps. I think connecting with you here has helped me look at my "program" a little closer. Feeling good and thankful that I'm where I'm at.
Peace to you, Brother Wolf (hey, have you heard the AA wolf analogies yet? Cunning, baffling, powerful and patient. My meeting room has sveral pictures of wolves--I'll think of you next time I'm there and send you some Cali AA vibes)

No need for guilt--just a little bit of bi-coastal AA BS.

Actually I thought I might be able to sneak my query to Dire under the wire, but you are ever vigilant about your threads, Mr Tell.

How about that It Hurts Me Too with Duane on 4/26? Love that slide!

Hey Dire--hope all is well, at least as well as can be expected in the light of current difficulties, which I know all too well my friend. Hang in there--and keep us in your thoughts too. We all need each other more than any of us know on our own...
